Dimensions & Scale

Length 780 M × Width 200 M × Height 140 M

Operating mass: approximately 5,240,000 ton (metric tons). 780 × 200 × 140 M envelope × 0.12 occupied-volume fraction × 2.0 ton/m³ armor-and-machinery density, rounded.

Weapons & Armament

One Spinal Mass-Driver Railgun is the signature heavy weapon. Its recessed rail channel is approximately 7 M wide, with a 70 M accelerator run, a reinforced muzzle bridge and a massive armored breech. Two shoulder turrets, one flush missile block and six point-defense nodes form the secondary fit. The accelerator and supporting mounts remain within the planform instead of extending the weapon beyond the hull.

External Anatomy

A reinforced forward load rib connects to a widened socket collar, protected central machinery and a short armored propulsion stern. The low command volume is sheltered behind the main fighting structure. Large calm armor fields, shallow geometric bands and dark service roots separate the major masses. The railgun receives structural depth above and below its mounting bed without placing unsupported gun volume outside the body.

Functional Architecture

Protected power trunks connect the central energy and heat-buffer districts to the accelerator rings and armored breech. Recessed sensing and fire-control systems coordinate the axial weapon, shoulder batteries and close-defense nodes. Independent service boundaries separate weapon handling, command and propulsion. The four drive housings are integrated directly into the stern load structure; their output is coordinated with alignment and weapon preparation.

Fleet Role

Lancer Destroyer. Concentrated axial fire and strong thrust favor short, deliberate attack windows against designated high-value targets. A low weapon count concentrates power and maintenance on the primary accelerator. Reinforced load paths keep the signature gun integrated into the body rather than attached as a separate fragile assembly.

Life Between Stars

Space operation favors a planned attack axis, controlled approach and prompt repositioning after a strike. Four high-thrust nozzles support translation and changes of orientation, while the main battery requires whole-vessel alignment rather than unrestricted turret traverse. Drive output, accelerator charging and cooling share finite energy. Independent phase travel, marine operation and ground movement are not part of this destroyer fit.

Defense Architecture

Six flush point-defense nodes cover close threats while reinforced armor protects the command volume, accelerator breech and drive roots. Isolated service regions limit the spread of faults. Defensive coverage remains modest compared with a fleet fortress, so the destroyer relies on positioning, escort coordination and a maintained withdrawal route.

Operational Limits

The main weapon cannot cover every approach without reorienting the vessel. Charging and cooling create intervals when the destroyer depends on its smaller batteries and escorts. Sustained frontal exposure, poor target confirmation or a blocked withdrawal route can turn a penetration attack into an unfavorable holding action. Limited logistics volume and secondary armament prevent it from serving as a carrier or mobile fleet base.

Individual History

NightVector Lancer Destroyer joined the Threnval approach group after a commissioning exercise that exposed the difference between a powerful gun and a usable attack axis. Captain Ilyra Venn ordered the four drives to hold a narrow alignment while gunnery officer Taren Sol prepared the spinal accelerator. The charge completed before the navigation team could confirm the departure lane. Ilyra withheld the shot and repeated the exercise with the withdrawal included. The crew accepted the destroyer as ready only when it could leave the position it had worked so hard to reach.

At the Elnareth outer approach, the group received a convoy whose escort formations had been separated by conflicting contact reports. NightVector was tasked with opening a limited route past a hostile battery, not pursuing every nearby target. Navigation officer Ceryn Hal identified a firing orientation that also preserved a return corridor behind the socket collar. Taren preferred a closer alignment with a cleaner sightline. Ilyra chose Ceryn's route and asked the gun crew to solve the longer observation interval rather than spend their movement reserve on a perfect opening position.

The first attack window closed before the main discharge. A returning survey craft crossed the intended axis, carrying a warning that the convoy's rear section had slowed unexpectedly. NightVector shifted orientation and let its shoulder batteries cover a nearer approach while the accelerator held its prepared state. That delay consumed cooling margin and forced a partial reset. Taren objected that the destroyer had surrendered its strongest advantage. The survey report then identified a defended obstruction directly along the route the convoy would have used if the earlier shot had been followed by immediate advance.

The second window produced a bounded success. NightVector's axial strike disabled the selected battery long enough for the convoy to cross a verified segment of the approach. Its four drives began withdrawal before the remaining hostile sectors could concentrate on the destroyer. A damaged escort still needed assistance, and the ship's limited servicing stores could not replace the escort's failed machinery. Ilyra transferred a working communications package and stayed within the escort's sensing range until a support vessel arrived. The group secured the passage without pretending the destroyer had also become a repair carrier.

During the return, Ceryn discovered a small drift in the accelerator's structural alignment. The fault had not prevented the strike, but another full-power preparation could have widened it. Taren supported a service delay despite the next detachment's request for immediate departure. At Elnareth, the crew replaced a damaged load collar and repeated the approach exercise with reduced thrust available. Their report retained the interrupted first window, the successful second strike and the escort's unresolved repair requirement as separate outcomes. The distinction helped the next command group plan support before asking for another penetration attack.

NightVector now carries a different readiness procedure through the Threnval routes. Navigation confirms a usable return, gunnery verifies the prepared axis, and engineering reserves enough thermal margin for a canceled opportunity. The destroyer remains capable of concentrated long-range attack, but the crew no longer measures a deployment by whether the railgun fires at the first available interval. A new convoy has requested protection through an unfamiliar lateral approach. Ilyra has assigned the opening survey to Ceryn and the reserve calculation to Taren, leaving them a shared problem to resolve before committing the ship's largest weapon.
