SwiftSpearhead Lancer Destroyer

Long-range axial-strike destroyer

A Human lancer destroyer built around a compound three-directional forebody and one dominant Recoil-Sleeve Shock Cannon. Four rear high-thrust nozzles support deliberate attack positioning and withdrawal, while two shoulder turrets, a flush missile block and six point-defense nodes provide secondary coverage. Its concentrated attack depends on a usable axis, recoil integrity and a return route that the wider formation can actually follow.

Dimensions & Scale

Length 660 M. Width, height and operating mass are not specified.

The signature cannon has an approximately 6 M bore, a 60 M barrel, a mount housing about 35 M across and an approximately 26 M rise above the surrounding deck. These local weapon dimensions do not establish the vessel's total width or height.

Weapons & Armament

One Recoil-Sleeve Shock Cannon forms the main battery. A heavy barrel sits within a thick segmented sleeve and terminates in a wide ported muzzle collar. Paired recuperator cylinders flank the breech, while a broad armored foundation transfers the firing load into the central junction.

Two shoulder turrets occupy the broader forebody roots. One flush missile block sits over the rear collar region, and six point-defense nodes remain close to the protective surface. Secondary calibers, missile capacity, projectile type, firing rate, energy demand and effective range are unassigned. No separate axial beam weapon is added to this cannon configuration.

External Anatomy

A tall central spike, a broad crescent-like lateral projection and a backward-curving opposing hook create the distinctive compound forebody. Their thick roots join the main keel rather than floating outside the ship. The gun's breech and sleeve form the largest mechanical assembly above that junction.

A low protected command region occupies the inner hull, while four main nozzle housings are fused into the compact stern. Warm ivory armor, dark navy structural regions, orange panels, dark gunmetal machinery and narrow cyan-lit fittings separate the principal volumes without replacing their shape.

Functional Architecture

Axial preparation — Navigation and gunnery must agree on a useful engagement orientation and a viable withdrawal. The authored doctrine includes the movement limits of the convoy being protected rather than counting only the destroyer's own response.

Recoil management — The cannon's segmented sleeve, recuperator cylinders and protected foundation distribute loads through the occupied central structure. Damaged restraints can prevent another safe preparation even after a successful discharge.

Propulsion and command — Four rear high-thrust nozzles support positioning and withdrawal under a protected command region. Exact acceleration, drive output and independent interstellar capability have not been supplied.

Technical Specifications

Offensive rating: 84/100 — A dominant heavy cannon concentrates the intended attack along a deliberately prepared axis

Defensive rating: 61/100 — Thick central foundations, protective structure and six nearby point-defense nodes support survival without making every projecting branch equally protected.

Mobility rating: 74/100 — Four high-thrust rear nozzles support attack positioning and withdrawal, constrained by orientation and neighboring traffic

Tactical cognition rating: 71/100 — Route confidence, coordinated firing decisions and incomplete survey reports govern useful employment of the main battery

Endurance rating: 48/100 — Cannon servicing, recoil inspection and propulsion reserves limit repeated independent attack cycles

Fleet support rating: 31/100 — Escort and route-opening work is useful but does not supply a carrier's recovery or repair capacity

Fleet Role

Deliver concentrated axial attack to open a limited passage or disrupt a selected formation position. The destroyer coordinates its main cannon with nearer shoulder, missile and point-defense coverage, then preserves enough maneuvering reserve to leave the prepared firing posture. Its role does not require pursuit beyond the route the formation has verified.

09 / VESSEL RECORD

Life Between Stars

The assigned domain is space. Four high-thrust nozzles are integrated into the stern, supporting approach alignment and departure from a committed attack posture. The forebody's compound shape and the cannon's concentration of mass make orientation part of the engagement problem.

Independent atmospheric flight, ocean operation and phase travel are not established. A space assignment does not by itself supply an unrestricted interstellar drive or eliminate the need for navigation and servicing support.

Defense Architecture

The low command region and thick junction structure shelter critical functions behind occupied armor. Two shoulder stations, a flush missile block and six point-defense nodes provide secondary coverage within the connected ship.

The projecting forebody, exposed gun interfaces and rear drive regions remain meaningful vulnerabilities. A damaged recoil restraint can remove the main offensive capability while leaving the vessel mobile. Withdrawal planning and escort coordination remain necessary after a successful strike.

11 / VESSEL RECORD

Operational Limits

The principal weapon requires a useful axis and a structurally sound recoil assembly. A strong firing position can still be unsuitable if it blocks returning survey traffic or leaves a slower protected vessel behind. Preparing a second discharge is not automatically safe after the first.

The secondary inventory supports the main role without replacing it. Servicing stores, propulsion reserve and available observations are finite. Width, complete height, operating mass, firing range and independent phase capability remain unassigned.

12 / VESSEL RECORD

Strategic Strengths

A distinctive, strongly rooted forebody provides a substantial foundation for the signature cannon. Four integrated main nozzles support deliberate positioning, while a restrained secondary inventory preserves clear weapon hierarchy. The ship is most useful when a formation needs a concentrated local action and an explicitly planned return.

13 / TACTICAL PROFILE

Capability Assessment

Authored relative doctrine ratings favor concentrated attack and mobility, with competent route and engagement coordination. Moderate protection and limited endurance reflect the costs of an exposed firing posture and heavy-cannon servicing. Low support reflects specialization rather than an inability to protect another vessel. These comparisons are fictional editorial judgments, not measured performance.

History & Lineage

Universe lore · authored service history

Origin

Commissioned for the Threnval approach formation as a cannon-armed lancer destroyer. Its first individual service record developed around navigator Seyra Drell's unresolved debt to her estranged navigation tutor and a convoy whose safe return depended on the same finite maneuvering reserve.

Lineage & Branch

Human compound-forebody lancer branch, in the supplied recoil-sleeve cannon configuration. This individual develops a separate service record from NightVector while using clearly attributed portions of the latter's incomplete Threnval survey.

Fleet or Unit

Human — Threnval approach formation, assigned to a later lateral-passage convoy detachment

Individual History

SwiftSpearhead entered the Threnval approach formation with Captain Meyra Keth, gunnery chief Orren Vask and navigator Seyra Drell bringing different expectations to the recoil-sleeve cannon. Orren wanted a clear statement of which threats the weapon could remove. Seyra wanted to know who would still be outside the safe route afterward. She had worked on slow convoy craft before qualifying for destroyer service, and her former navigation tutor Rethan Val remained aboard the maintenance vessel Oriswake. They had stopped corresponding after he publicly criticized a shortcut in her first fleet route. During acceptance, she insisted that a damaged tender's turning limits appear in the departure exercise. Meyra kept the requirement after the gun crew had finished its part.

A later assignment brought the first observations from Ceryn Hal's opening survey of an unfamiliar lateral approach through the Threnval routes. The message established a usable near segment and left the farther bend unresolved; it did not announce that NightVector's survey was complete. It also retained an unanswered maintenance signal near Oriswake's last scheduled working region. Seyra declared her estrangement from its navigation tutor before presenting the route. Meyra left her on navigation duty but required every proposed extension to carry its observation and reserve limits openly. The disclosure protected the chart's credibility without making the unanswered signal less personal.

At the rendezvous, a freighter carrying replacement circulation machinery reported damage that made the planned turn impractical. Its master offered to wait outside the protected formation while the faster ships crossed. The convoy coordinator accepted until Seyra showed which destination habitats needed that machinery. A faint signal then repeated part of Oriswake's old working identifier beyond the unobserved bend. Seyra requested an investigation. The reserve calculation showed that SwiftSpearhead could follow the uncertain signal or cover the freighter's slow crossing and retain a safe return; it could not promise both. Meyra asked Seyra to enter that calculation under her own name.

Orren identified a hostile tracking position controlling the freighter's available turning space. Suppressing it required a committed firing posture and a withdrawal that spent the margin Seyra hoped to use for Oriswake. He offered her no argument about whose people mattered more, only the time the gun and drives would occupy. Seyra asked to send a limited listening probe along the observed boundary before the approach. It returned an incomplete repeated phrase without a reliable position. She then signed the convoy solution. Her tutor's absence remained on the chart, but it did not become evidence that another ship could safely be left behind.

SwiftSpearhead's cannon suppressed the selected tracking position long enough for the freighter to clear the verified near bend. The shoulder stations guarded nearer interference while the destroyer's four main drives carried it out of the committed posture. Orren maintained coverage of the convoy rather than proposing an extra strike beyond its passage. The machinery cargo survived and continued through a separately verified connection. Seyra watched the unused branch disappear from their return plot. No report from Oriswake arrived before withdrawal. The success was real, and she had made a choice that did not include the person she most wanted to bring home.

At the servicing anchorage, the convoy coordinator asked whether the crossing proved the whole lateral route open. Seyra refused to sign that wording. She also refused a suggestion that Oriswake be listed as lost merely to close the unanswered traffic record. Meyra supported both distinctions, accepting a report that could satisfy neither the next timetable nor the families waiting for certainty. Rethan's partner, Ivera, asked whether Seyra had ever answered his last letter. She had not. Seyra kept that question beside the delivered machinery acknowledgments, unable to make either record cancel the other.

SwiftSpearhead now prepares for another Threnval deployment while Seyra compares the probe's fragment with Oriswake's earlier maintenance traffic. A repeated phrase matches a correction Rethan once used, but an old recording could carry the same words. Ceryn's survey remains separately attributed, with the farther route still requiring observation. Orren wants a mission that can return successfully without a cannon discharge, and Meyra is seeking a survey escort with enough reserve to investigate one bounded region. Seyra must decide whether she can navigate that search without asking the next convoy to carry a promise the available evidence cannot make.
